There's a scientific explanation for that ([info]hugemind) wrote in [info]spnematography,

Episode Prompt and Discussion 7x10

That was hurty and awesome and full of love.

The rules in a nutshell:

  1. pick a screencap or two (or more), write a meta
  2. post meta in a new entry (here or link to your lj), use lj-cuts and warn for spoilers if necessary
  3. use "The Visual Story at a Glance: Death's Door (7x10)" in the subject line when you post the meta; if you want to post the meta for an episode before the prompt is up, go right ahead, just change the title to fit the episode. :)

These episode prompts are our spin on the traditional meta by examining how the characters' journey and plot are visually reflected in the show. The idea is to generate a visual summary for each episode, something that one can flip though and get a sense of the major themes and plot points using pictures as the foundation as well as (hopefully) generate discussion and give everyone something new to look at. With permission, posts may be incorporated into our community project: The Viewer's Guide.

Using screencaps as ammunition, discuss how you think the visual material reinforces character development/motivation and/or the plot for a single episode. Feel free to take the character angle or the plot angle or both. Which specific components discussed are up to you. How long or short your entry is also at your discretion (but if you want to go full-on "meta and multi-screencap" we definitely won't complain). Because everyone will likely have different opinions and pick different caps, the possibilities are unlimited. Therefore, there's no limit to how many people can contribute. There's no need to claim a prompt; post the resulting meta in a separate entry no matter the size. We only ask that you please place the following title "The Visual Story at a Glance: Death's Door (7x10)" in the subject line of your meta. This along with the separate entries will help keep meta organized and easily searchable/archiveable. Feel free to post at your journal and link here or post directly to this community. The prompts will be open indefinitely.

Go forth and enjoy the pretty pictures and think thinky thoughts. We look forward to hearing what you have to say.

They did a wonderful job with exploring the inside of Bobby's noggin and the visuals followed that. I'm so proud of our Show. \o/

There was a lot of soft light used in Bobby's memories. And it started to get more blurred/glowing toward the end as the memories started to fade. Even the boys looked a little translucent even before they disappeared.

Loved the part where the doctors started working on Bobby and lit this bright light that colored the curtain almost golden and then we cut to Bobby's memory where he torches the bones and the light is almost the same color. Almost like the happenings of the real world bleed through.

And then there were shots done with reflections that gave an extra boost to the unreal and soft feeling of the ep.

The final picks for now are the Bob Singer specials: big and pretty shots that are like pieces of art. I would write sonnets to the one with Dean in the hallway, but since I'm not a poet, I'll write meta in the nearest possible future.

I swear, the more I go through my caps, the more I notice awesome things about this ep. \o/

I am so with you, hugemind! I noticed and appreciated the same things as you. I'm very much looking forward to reading any expanded thoughts you put together.

Here's the one from that hallway that is taking over my imagination.

It shows Dean's blurry reflection just where he lands his punch. Similarly, Dean pounds on his own image before Dick rolls down the window.

I'm trying to put something together, but RL is being mean and I also keep coming up with more things I sort of want to mention.

Those caps are a good call! I wonder how much Dean blames himself for Bobby.

That sense of responsibility is sort of a defining characteristic for Dean. If he's willing to shoulder unemployment and the Lindbergh baby, just imagine what losing Bobby will do to him.

I hope RL eases up and allows you to post before long. Your ideas usually give me a good start for organizing my thoughts and this episode keeps swirling around in my head (and heart!).

just imagine what losing Bobby will do to him.

I know, right?! He's also showing the same kind of intensity in denying the possibility that Bobby's dead as he did in 1x21 when Meg tried to tell him that John's dead ("He's not dead! He can't be.").

I'm hoping that I'm posting the meta (at the very latest) next week. In addition to RL, I just keep getting more ideas as I'm writing and hanging out here in the comm. :)

I loved the way they had the reflection of the moon on Bobby's window dwindle as it started to go dark. I also really liked the transitions from one memory to the other and to the outside world and the way the quality of the light changed.

l liked the reflection of the moon, but also noted that it would not have faded like that if an actual storm front or clouds were coming. But since this happened in Bobby's head, it doesn't really matter if it's realistic or not, because it was a very nice visual anvil of things to come.

The transition between Bobby's memories and the real world where Rufus was about to bust the crypt and then the image cut to the swinging doors in the hospital was very symbolic!

There were some neat images that I liked in this episode in addition to the lighting. There were a whole bunch of images of shattered dishes and glasses. I put some other caps in my journal but my favorite is this one of the place Dean hit the glasses. I like how the punch centers on "trauma center".

They used blinds and door frames to create a feel of closed in and trapped. I like how they shot footage of the organ donor guy through a window with blinds.

Another image I really like Bobby keeping the solution to the reaper problem in a book like so many of the rest of his answers have come from. It kind of sums up his main roll as a hunter.

And just because -

The way the glass fractures under Dean's punch does give the feeling of losing Bobby being the center of the boys' hurt, but I'd also like to think of the concentric circles as ripples that are caused by this. Like this sets in motion bigger things that will be revealed after the hiatus. One could be that this gives Dean a reason to keep fighting the good fight.

The blinds were really effective that way. I sort of want to compare those shots with the one of Dean looking out of a window with blinds in 2x01 when Tessa the reaper was giving Dean the big schpiel about how he had done his part in the fight (can't put the cap up at this time). And now that I think about it, that isn't the only thing I'd like to compare between 2x01 and this episode.

Bobby. \o/

My thoughts about the hospital glass Dean shatters went a different direction. It certainly was a deliberate choice on the show's part so I do think it's fair to theorize about it. Your ripple idea would suggest a widening influence. I'm glad to have your more positive interpretation to consider!

Anyway, I saw a web in the design which seems like a trap cutting off progress. That takes me immediately to 6.13 Unforgiven and Sam facing distressing missing memories. Beyond that (and because I'm never satisfied until I've gone a step too far) I connect webs to season one and the dreamcatcher in the Impala's trunk and the window at Missouri Mosely's
title or description and even to the devil's traps Bobby taught the boys.

Missouri's window is really cool. I didn't watch the early seasons with nearly the same thought as I do now. I'm going to have to rewatch them when I get some time.

It is a cool window! I believe it also showed up in 2.04 Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. Even so, it didn't stick with me until I was rewatching the early seasons for the umpteenth time after season four made me more aware that the show makes purposeful visual choices about telling the story.

Hee, it occurred to me that maybe I'm taking this a bit far, but since I've heard BTS interviews where writers, producers and crew agonize over minuscule details, I figured that someone along the way decided that the glass should shatter like this. And the episode left me oddly hopeful, so the positive interpretation comes from that. Also, the way Dean got in leviathan!Dick's face suggests that maybe he's not about to drive off the cliff right this minute. I try to be positive whenever I can, because otherwise this show would crush me. :)

WEBS. WALLS. \o/ Oooo, I need to watch the ep to see if there are other themes that tie this into S6. But if we're thinking webs, then wouldn't Dean be the one here to spin it? Maybe meaning that he's the predator and the leviathans should really watch out.

Ripples outward is something I didn't think of. It kind of goes with the Leviathans rippling out from Cas's body underwater. The title card with the splatting goo kind of spreads out a bit.

I'm going to have to go back to 2.01. I know there were blinds in there. Plus it's a good excuse to watch that ep again. It's one of my favorites.

I'm really looking forward to seeing where the rest of the season goes.

December 13 2011, 08:58:59 UTC 5 months ago

I didn't think of the leviathans and Cas's body, but YES.

2x01 is one of my favorites, too. There were lots of blinds and there was Dean trapped in a plane of existence that wasn't quite ours and there was a reaper and there were exit signs that Dean avoids whereas Bobby's really looking for doors.

I can't wait to see what show has in store for us! So far, the boys have been hunted rather than doing the hunting, so it'd be awesome if this piece of intel that Bobby delivered turned things back into the way they should be.
